5 Gen GST alternatives for GST refund preparation
Compare alternatives to Gen GST for refund preparation: official GST utilities, MyGSTRefund, Zoho Books, a CA workflow and Fast GST Refund.
The best Gen GST alternative depends on whether you need a broad GST suite, a managed refund service, accounting-data extraction or only the official refund utilities. Replacing Gen GST feature-for-feature is different from finding the smallest tool for one claim.
This comparison covers public product information for service-export refunds under LUT. We did not install or test the competing products.
Alternatives at a glance
| Alternative | Choose it when | What you give up versus a broad GST suite |
|---|---|---|
| GST portal + official utilities | You want a no-vendor DIY route | Multi-client workflow, support and integrated compliance features |
| MyGSTRefund | You want a platform plus assisted refund service | Direct operator control and a conventional licence comparison |
| Zoho Books + official utilities | Your source records already live in Zoho | Specialist refund generation and end-to-end claim management |
| CA-led spreadsheets/templates | You value practitioner judgement and flexible workings | Standardisation depends on the practice |
| Fast GST Refund | You want focused self-serve automation and can wait for launch | Available production use; the product is still in validation |
1. GST portal and official utilities
This is the closest alternative if your only Gen GST use case is one refund. It produces the official Statement 3 and Annexure B formats without another licence. It fits a low-volume claimant who can maintain a controlled reconciliation.
Use the claim-contents guide to see the work beyond the utilities. The portal file is not the complete evidence pack.
2. MyGSTRefund
MyGSTRefund publicly positions itself as a hybrid SaaS and performance-based service covering refunds, returns, reconciliation, notices and dashboards. It is an alternative operating model: the provider advertises help with the outcome, rather than only software your team runs. See the MyGSTRefund review for the public-source audit.
Compare fees, access and responsibility carefully. Start with MyGSTRefund vs Gen GST and the MyGSTRefund review.
3. Zoho Books plus official utilities
Zoho Books is a source-system alternative, not a specialist refund replacement. It can export invoices and bills and reconcile GSTR-2B. This can eliminate duplicate extraction when the accounting records are already clean. Zoho invoice export, GSTR-2B reconciliation.
You still need bank evidence, receipt allocation, eligibility review and portal-file preparation. Follow how to export Zoho Books data for a refund.
4. A CA-led spreadsheet workflow
A controlled spreadsheet can be the rational choice for low volume or unusual claims. It can adapt to amendments, old periods and bespoke explanations. Its weakness is governance: formulas, utility versions, review notes and client separation need deliberate controls.
Ask for a source index, locked calculation, exception report, reviewer sign-off and final-file archive. For practice requirements, use the 12-point CA software checklist.
5. Fast GST Refund
Fast GST Refund is a focused self-serve workflow for service-export refund preparation. It brings source imports, export-receipt matching, inward-supply review, a traceable refund calculation, and validated Statement 3 and Annexure B outputs into one workspace.
Early access is not open yet, so it is not an available replacement for Gen GST today. The current flow shows the preparation path relevant to your claim; the guidance it returns is useful, but it is not the product. Fast GST Refund vs Gen GST explains the difference.
How to make the final choice
Use one anonymised service-export case to test every shortlisted route. Include partial receipts, a credit note, a late 2B invoice, an imported service under RCM and a capital asset. Require each vendor or process to produce a traceable working—not only a successful JSON.
