**You can withdraw a filed RFD-01 by filing RFD-01W, but the portal offers this only until the application's status is "Refund Application Acknowledged".** The credit or cash debited for the claim goes back to the same ledger, and you can then file a fresh application. [CGST Rules, rule 90(5) and (6), inserted by Notification 15/2021-Central Tax](https://gstcouncil.gov.in/sites/default/files/2024-05/notfctn-15-central-tax-english-2021.pdf#page=1); [GST portal manual: withdrawing a filed refund application](https://tutorial.gst.gov.in/userguide/refund/manual_withdraw_refund.htm).

This guide uses a refund of accumulated input tax credit (ITC) on exports of services under LUT as the example. The withdrawal steps are the same for other refund categories.

## When should I withdraw instead of waiting?

Withdraw when you find a mistake yourself after filing. Form RFD-01W lists these reasons:

- the application was filed by mistake;
- it was filed under the wrong refund category;
- it contains wrong details, such as the wrong period, turnover, Net ITC or statement data;
- another reason, which you specify.

[Form GST RFD-01W](https://gstcouncil.gov.in/sites/default/files/2024-05/notfctn-15-central-tax-english-2021.pdf#page=4).

You do not need to withdraw in these cases:

- **The officer has issued a deficiency memo (RFD-03).** That application is no longer processed. Correct the deficiencies and file a fresh application; see the [RFD-03 and RFD-08 guide](/guides/gst-refund-deficiency-memo-rfd-03/).
- **The officer has issued a notice (RFD-08).** Reply in RFD-09 within the time allowed. Withdrawal is no longer available.

If the application has already been acknowledged and you left out an invoice or some credit, see [a second refund application for the same period](/guides/gst-refund-second-application-same-period/).

## How long can I withdraw?

Rule 90(5) allows withdrawal at any time before the officer issues a provisional refund order (RFD-04), a payment order (RFD-05), a final order (RFD-06), a withholding order (RFD-07) or a notice (RFD-08).

The portal is narrower. It shows the **Withdraw Refund Application** button only while the application's status is one of these:

- Refund Application Filed
- Bank Account validation pending at PFMS
- Bank Account validated by PFMS
- Bank Account validation failed
- Refund Application Acknowledged

For any other status, the button is not shown. [GST portal FAQs on withdrawing a refund application, questions 1 and 3](https://tutorial.gst.gov.in/userguide/refund/FAQs_withdraw_refund.htm).

If you find a mistake, check the status straight away. A low-risk export claim can receive a provisional refund order within seven days of acknowledgement, and after that the portal no longer offers withdrawal. See [refund stages and timelines](/guides/gst-refund-stages-timeline/).

## Withdraw the application on the GST portal

Before you start, keep a copy of the filed application and its attachments. You need the authorised signatory's DSC or EVC.

1. Log in at gst.gov.in and go to **Services → User Services → My Applications**.
2. In **Application Type**, select **REFUNDS**. Choose **From Date** and **To Date** around the filing date, then click **SEARCH**.
3. Click the ARN of the application. On the **Case Details** page, open the **APPLICATIONS** tab and click **Withdraw Refund Application**.
4. Click **Generate Reference Number**. Select the reason for withdrawal; if you choose **Others**, describe the reason.
5. Optionally, upload up to four supporting documents in PDF. The manual gives a 5 MB maximum.
6. Select the declaration, choose the authorised signatory and enter the place. Click **PREVIEW** to download a draft of the withdrawal application.
7. Click **FILE WITH DSC** or **FILE WITH EVC**.

The portal shows a success message and sends an email and an SMS. Download the filed form from the **GST RFD-01 W** link on the case details page and keep it with the original application. [GST portal manual](https://tutorial.gst.gov.in/userguide/refund/manual_withdraw_refund.htm).

## What happens after withdrawal?

- You cannot take any further action on the withdrawn application.
- The amount debited from the electronic credit or cash ledger when you filed is credited back to the same ledger.
- You can file a fresh application for the same period, part of it, or combined with another period, as if the original had never been filed.

[GST portal manual, notes after step 8](https://tutorial.gst.gov.in/userguide/refund/manual_withdraw_refund.htm). Check that the credit has returned to your ledger before you file again, because the fresh application debits it again. To decide whether to file for one month or several, see [monthly or combined refund periods](/guides/gst-refund-claim-period/).

## Check the time limit before you file again

A refund application must be filed within two years of the relevant date under [section 54(1) of the CGST Act](https://www.indiacode.nic.in/indiacode/bitstream/123456789/15689/1/A2017-12.pdf#page=57). After a deficiency memo, the rules exclude the time between filing and the memo from those two years for the fresh claim. [Rule 90(3), proviso](https://gstcouncil.gov.in/sites/default/files/2024-05/notfctn-15-central-tax-english-2021.pdf#page=1). The rules contain no similar exclusion for a withdrawn application.

If the time limit is close, file the corrected application promptly and have the date checked before you withdraw.

To correct Statement 3 or Annexure B before filing again, change the entries where you made the file and create a new file with a new name; see [create Statement 3 and Annexure B JSON files without Excel](/guides/generate-statement-3-annexure-b-json/).
